Type in small and friendly into Google and one gets listings for ‘small, friendly church in __________’ The small and friendly a supposed cause and effect. Now my little church has befriended me and I have befriended it. Some great people who work very hard. This is the only small church I have every been in. From this limited experience, here is my review on on ‘friendliness’ in the small church.
1. Everyone knows everyone’s names and assumes you do too. 2.
Ushers are unecessary. Getting greeted in the tiny foyer is enough. After that you are on your own. Ok, it is only five rows of chairs but that makes it even harder.
3. Since the same people show up every week, it is ok to skip a time of fellowship.
4. Leadership is overwhelmed and prefer to do it themselves. Depending on others is risky.
5. You learn the big picture very slowly. And only if you care. Which means that knowing the congregational history, organization, and social structure is like trying to describe an elephant blindfolded.
6. There is no directory.
7. There are special meetings out of town for special people. They are called cluster meetings and are by invitation only.
8. This is a church where people don’t become members because they can’t afford the dues.
9. The last minister was wonderful
10. The last minister was a problem
11. We want to grow
There are so many possibilities.
